BBC Young Musician 2006 finalists announced



Five outstanding young performers have been chosen to perform in the BBC Young Musician 2006 Final, which takes place at 2.00pm on Saturday 20 May at The Sage Gateshead.

 

The finalists are:

 

  • Cordelia Williams, piano
    (age 17, from Wiltshire, studying in Manchester)
  • Mark Simpson, clarinet
    (age 17, from Liverpool, studying in Manchester)
  • David Massey, guitar
    (age 18, from Welwyn Garden City)
  • Toby Kearney, percussion
    (age 18, from Shropshire, studying in Manchester)
  • Huw Morgan, trumpet
    (age 18, from South Wales, studying in Manchester)

 

The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the Final (Saturday 20 May, The Sage, Gateshead, 2.00-5.30pm), which is broadcast on BBC TWO at 5.20pm the same afternoon.

 

The Final is supported by the Tabor Foundation and will be performed in front of a sold-out audience, and the finalists will perform with The Northern Sinfonia conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier.

 

The winner will be selected by a distinguished panel of judges chaired by conductor Marin Alsop and including pianist Angela Hewitt, clarinettist Dame Thea King and Kathryn McDowell, managing director of the London Symphony Orchestra.

 

Violinist Nicola Benedetti, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2004, will perform while the judges deliberate.

 

The winner receives the coveted title BBC Young Musician of the Year and a BBC Young Musician Travel Award to promote their musical studies as well as a Waterford Crystal trophy.

 

The five finalists were selected from 25 exceptionally talented young musicians who took part in the semi-finals, broadcast on BBC FOUR each night from Saturday 13 May to Wednesday 17 May.

 

The finalists' recitals are broadcast tonight (Thursday 18 May) on BBC FOUR at 9.00pm.

 

BBC Young Musician is a biennial classical music competition aimed at discovering future classical stars and exceptional musical talent and is firmly established as Britain's premier classical music competition for young people.

The BBC Young Musician of the Year competition for keyboard, string, brass and woodwind players was launched in 1978 by Humphrey Burton and the late Walter Todds of the BBC's then television music department. Percussion was introduced as a fifth category in 1994.

 

Many previous winners and finalists have gone on to develop major international careers, among them Stephen Hough, Thomas Adès and Nicola Benedetti.
