BBC FOUR today announces the nominations for the third BBC FOUR World Cinema Award, as voted for by the UK's leading film critics, heads of film schools and festival directors.

The shortlist reveals an eclectic and inspirational range of films, as follows:

2046 - Wong Kar Wai

China, France, Germany, Hong Kong

Downfall - Oliver Hirschbiegel

Germany, Italy, Austria

House of Flying Daggers - Zhang Yimou

China, Hong Kong

Look at Me - Agnès Jaoui

France, Italy

The Sea Inside - Alejandro Amenábar

Spain, France, Italy

Tropical Malady - Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Thailand, France, Germany, Italy

Jonathan Ross, who will host the live award programme on BBC FOUR, says: "Typical! You wait for one great foreign film to come along - and then six arrive at once. Where else would you find Adolf Hitler, a charismatic quadriplegic and a revolutionary warrior from Tang Dynasty China all rubbing shoulders?"

The BBC FOUR World Cinema Award 2006 event will take place at the National Film Theatre, London and is sponsored, for the first time, by Pioneer GB Limited.

The BBC FOUR World Cinema Award will be shown on 26 January at 9.00pm on BBC FOUR.

Special previews of the event will be transmitted on The Cinema Show on BBC FOUR - hosted by Stuart Maconie - in the three weeks leading up to the event.

Notes to Editors

This is the third BBC FOUR World Cinema Award. Last year's winner was The Return, a dark thriller directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev.

Ten days before the event, the BBC Big Screens in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Hull and Leeds will be running ten-minute packages of the nominated films.

The BBC FOUR World Cinema Award will be judged by a panel of people with an expert knowledge of international cinema past and present (such as film-makers, actors, critics and writers).

Previous jury members include actors Gillian Anderson and Robert Carlyle, Oscar-winning director Kevin MacDonald and singer Björk. More details on the judging panel will be available shortly.

Pioneer GB Limited is the sponsor of BBC FOUR World Cinema Award.
