The nominations for this year's Frank Gillard Awards have been announced today with BBC Radio Merseyside leading the hunt for honours.
They have nominations in four categories with Radio Solent, Radio Berkshire and Three Counties Radio close behind with three apiece.
Twenty-two out of the 41 eligible stations and services have achieved nominations in the programme categories for the 2005 BBC Local Radio awards.
The prestigious Station of the Year Award won last year by this year's hosts, Radio Solent, will be contested by Radio Cumbria, Merseyside and Three Counties Radio.
The Radio Leeds duo Graham Liver and Nicola Rees take on Andrew Peach from Berkshire and Merseyside's Tony Snell for the Programme Presenter award.
In the Breakfast Programme category last year's bronze finalist BBC WM's Adrian Goldberg will hope to convert to gold in 2005 against Radio Newcastle's Mike Parr and Three Counties' Robert Perrone who is also nominated in Interactive, a category where he took gold in this year's Sony Awards.
In 2003 and 2004 Radio Devon won gold in the Radio Promotion category and the station's back again this year bidding for a record three gold Gillards in succession but two other West Country stations, Bristol and Gloucestershire, are out to thwart Devon's ambition.
The stations and the nominees will have to wait until Tuesday 27 September for the announcement of the winners at the Gillards Awards Dinner in the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth.
BBC Radio Five Live's Jane Garvey is the ceremony presenter and she will be joined by Michael Grade, the Chairman of the BBC, to present the coveted miniature busts of Frank Gillard to the gold winners.
In this 200th anniversary year of the battle of Trafalgar - and in the shadow of HMS Victory - there will be the inevitable Nelson touch to this year's awards dinner.
The awards are named in honour of the founder of BBC Local Radio in England, Frank Gillard, who died in 1998.
