BBC Radio 4 announced today that its current affairs programme More or Less, which returns this week with a new series, is to be co-produced for the first time by The Open University.

Presented by Andrew Dilnot, More or Less is the essential guide to numbers, risk, league tables, targets, budgets – measurement and quantification of every kind in the news, our personal lives and elsewhere.

The Open University investment will enable the programme to get to the bottom of some of the more difficult numbers stories.

The BBC will retain editorial control of the series.

Says Nicola Meyrick, Radio 4 Home Current Affairs Editor: "W
e are delighted by the prospect of this co-operation, which is the first ever between the Open University and a topical current affairs programme.

"The Open University's investment will enable More or Less to be still more ambitious in its content and production values and we look forward to a fruitful partnership."

In addition, The Open University will also be setting up a web site, linked to More or Less, which will offer visitors more information about the world of numbers, statistics and probability.

Says David Robinson, Head of Broadcasting at The Open University: "
The OU is one of Britain's top universities in Maths and Statistics and we are delighted to be working with BBC current affairs on a programme covering the application of numbers and mathematics to our everyday lives."

The current six-part series is produced by Michael Blastland and edited by Nicola Meyrick and starts on Radio 4 on Thursday 13 January 2005 at 3.00pm.
