Reach up for 1Xtra, 6 Music, BBC 7 and Five Live Sports Extra

More people are listening to BBC Radio and they are listening for longer, according to figures released today (21 October 2004) by RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research Ltd).

The figures - which cover the period 21 June to 12 September - show the BBC to have a share of 54.4% compared with Commercial Radio's 43.7%.

The BBC's share reflects growth on the year (51.8%) and on the previous quarter (53.1%).

The BBC's reach is also up at 32.5 million compared with Commercial Radio's 31 million.

Again, the BBC figures are up on the year (31.79m) and the quarter (32.4m).

Jenny Abramsky, Director, BBC Radio & Music, said: "In a week in which Tim Gardam's review of the BBC Digital Radio services recognised their distinctiveness, and that they have been 'instrumental in driving digital take up', I am glad to see healthy growth in our digital only services.

"All in all this is a strong quarter for BBC Radio."

Radio 1 saw the results of its schedule changes with an upturn in both reach and share.

The 15+ audience rose above the 10 million figure again (10.04m) compared with 9.85 million last year and 9.73 million last quarter.

Share at 8.6% is up on the year (8%) and the quarter (8.3%).

The figures for the audience aged 4+ are 12.23 million (compared with 11.5m last quarter and 11.8m last year) and share amongst this age group is 9.1% (8.5% last quarter, 8.1% last year).

On the Breakfast Show, Chris Moyles has an audience of 6.1 million aged 15+ and 7.4 million aged 4+, up over 1 million. These are the highest figures for three years.

Radio 2's reach at just over 13 million (13.06m) was down on last quarter's record figures (13.43m) but still up over half a million on last year (12.48m).

Share too dipped slightly on the quarter (16.1%) compared with (16.2%) but is up on the year (15%).

Radio 3's reach at 2.07 million is up slightly on the quarter (2.02m) but down on the year (2.2m).

Share at 1.1% is unchanged from last month and stable on the year (1.2%).

Radio 4's reach is 9.42 million down on the quarter (9.5m) and on the year (9.53m).

Share at 11.3% is up on the quarter (11%) and stable on the year.

Radio Five Live, which now records a combined reach with its digital service Five Live Sports Extra, has a reach of 6.47 million, up on the quarter (6.15m) and the year (5.79m).

Share at 5% is also up on the quarter (4.5%) and the year (4.3%).

The BBC's Local and National Radio's reach is 9.93 million, down slightly on the quarter (10.2m) but stable on the year (9.96m).

A strong share at 10.9% is unchanged on the quarter and the year.

The BBC's digital services have now been recording figures for a full year.

Five Live Sports Extra has a solo reach of 424,000 compared with 415,000 last quarter and 312,000 last year. Its share is unchanged at 0.1%.
