Barnie Choudhury, the BBC's Social Affairs Correspondent, has won the Media Personality of the Year award at the sixth GG2 Leadership and Diversity Awards.

The awards - instituted by the Asian Media and Marketing Group - aim to celebrate the talents and achievements of those from Britain's many ethnic minorities, in both the public and private sectors, who have achieved outstanding success in their particular field.

Barnie was chosen for his long record of achievement in breaking racially sensitive stories, in particular, his exclusive on the rise in Asian Crime for File On 4 (BBC Radio 4).

He received his award from Stephen Twigg, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools, at a star-studded ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel last night.

Barnie said: "I'm absolutely delighted. This means a lot to me and to the BBC because diversity is at the heart of the corporation. I hope that one day this will help me towards my dream of becoming a foreign correspondent."

Barnie Choudhury started at the BBC in 1986 on the BBC Training Scheme.

He was a regional correspondent for the East Midlands, and worked on Radio Five Live and Radio 4's World at One.

In two File On 4 documentaries, he tackled Asian Crime, giving an astonishing insight into the Asian underworld.

Barnie has won many awards for his coverage of race, ethnicity and diversity issues for the BBC, including an Emma in 2003, Race in the Media awards for radio and television, and a Council on Islamic relations award.

Barnie currently works for BBC ONE's Breakfast.
