The Council of the Royal Institute of British Architects
(RIBA) will award John Smith, BBC Director of Finance,
Property & Business Affairs, an Honorary Fellowship today, Tuesday 4
May 2004.
RIBA Honorary Fellowships reward the particular contributions
people make to architecture in its broadest sense: its promotion, administration
and outreach, its role in building more sustainable communities and
its role in the education of future generations.
John Smith has been instrumental in realising the recent
regeneration of the BBC's property portfolio, championing adventurous
architecture and design across the BBC's entire estate.
The BBC has recently embarked on a new, ambitious property
strategy to create inspirational architecture and working environments
which encourage staff creativity and are welcoming to the public.
The property strategy includes the creation of the new
BBC Media Village at White City by Allies and Morrison, the redevelopment
of BBC Broadcasting House in London by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard,
the creation of a new headquarters for BBC Scotland at Pacific Quay
in Glasgow by David Chipperfield Architects and the creation of a new
music centre for the BBC in London, The Music Box, by Foreign Office
Architects.
