HARDtalk with George Robertson, Nato Secretary-General

On BBC News 24's HARDtalk tonight (Friday 19 December) Tim Sebastian talks to George Robertson.

George Robertson - Lord Robertson of Port Ellen - has presided over four stormy years at Nato, which have seen the Macedonia campaign, the September 11 attacks and the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Those conflicts have thrown massive new stresses on the alliance and have exposed the gulf in defence spending between George Bush's America and Europe.

Robertson famously called Europe a "military pygmy", but does the pygmy really want to grow? Do plans for an EU defence capability threaten Nato? And can Nato serve in Iraq?

In his final month as Secretary-General, Lord Robertson talks to Tim Sebastian.

HARDtalk is on BBC News 24 at 11.30pm.
