  TWI
to produce BBC Sport's darts coverage
The
BBC announced today that the contract to produce the BBC's darts
coverage has been awarded to independent production company TWI.
The
initial contract will be for one year, covering the forthcoming
Winmau World Masters (November 2003) and the World Professional
Darts Championships in January 2004.
The
tender for the darts contract was announced earlier this year.
The
BBC has been reviewing its independent quota as it ensures it meets
the statutory obligation to commission at least 25% of its television
programmes from independent producers.
Barbara
Slater, BBC Head of General Sports, said: "I'm looking forward
to working closely with TWI to produce the most engaging and entertaining
darts coverage for the BBC.
"It's
a sport with much potential, and I'm confident that TWI will build
on the success of BBC Sport's recent coverage."
Graham
Fry, TWI Head of Production, said: "TWI is looking forward
to building on the BBC's excellent coverage by introducing entertaining
and compelling new elements to the programming that will appeal
to existing fans and attract new audiences to the sport of darts."
All the
BBC's digital services are now available on Freeview,
the new free-to-view digital terrestrial television service, as well
as on satellite and cable.
Freeview
offers the BBC's eight television channels, interactive services
from BBCi, as well as 11 national BBC radio networks.
