Frank Gillard Awards - nominations announced
The
nominations for this year's eagerly awaited Frank Gillard Awards
- celebrating the very best of BBC Local Radio - are
announced today (9 September).
Leading
the hunt for the honours this year is BBC Radio Derby with
a total of five nominations.
The
station will be hoping for a good year, following its success at
the Sony awards this year, where it won the Gold award in the Breakfast
Programme category.
Despite
not receiving any nominations at last year's Frank Gillard Awards,
Radio Derby will be hoping to emulate the success of Radio Leeds
which took home four Gold Gillard awards in 2002.
BBC
Radio Leeds is in the running again this year with four nominations,
followed by BBC Radio Newcastle, BBC Radio Sheffield
and BBC Radio Suffolk, each with three nominations.
The
nominations for the prestigious Station of the Year category pit
last year's Gold winner, Radio Leeds, against Radio Newcastle and
Radio Suffolk.
The
Outstanding Contribution to Local Radio Award will be announced
on the night and no shortlist is given with the rest of the nominations.
Anyone
working in BBC Local Radio may nominate for this award and once
again the range of nominees is wide.
Amongst
the many contenders is a friendly office cleaner, one of the longest
serving journalists in Local Radio, a receptionist and a helpline
organiser, the Radioman Training people and the GNS Iraq War team.
This
year saw a record number of entries for the Gillard Awards, with
313 entries from 44 BBC Local Radio stations and services.
Gold,
Silver and Bronze winners will be announced on 6 October at a special
awards ceremony at the National Museum of Film, Photography and
Television in Bradford.
Sonia
Deol of the BBC Asian Network is the ceremony presenter and she
will be joined by Greg Dyke, Director-General of the BBC, to present
the coveted miniature busts of Frank Gillard to the Gold winners.
The
awards are named in honour of the founder of BBC Local Radio in
England, Frank Gillard, who died in 1998.
