HARDtalk with Michael Meacher

Michael Meacher, former Environment Minister, is interviewed by Tim Sebastian on BBC News 24's HARDtalk tonight.

Anti-globalisation protesters are expected to turn up in large numbers at the World Trade Organisation's meeting in Cancun in September and genetically modified crops will be one of the issues they want answers on.

Is the truth about the crops and their impact being buried in slick multi-million public relations campaigns?

In June Michael Meacher claimed studies on the effects of GM foods on human health had been "scientifically vacuous", and warned the Government against rushing the debate.

He has just come back from Canada where GM crops have been grown commercially for the last seven years.

Tim Sebastian asks him what lessons can be learned from the Canadian experience and what he hopes to achieve in Cancun.

HARDtalk is on BBC News 24 at 11.30pm today (Wednesday 27 August 2003).
