HARDtalk with the EU Envoy to Afghanistan

Francesc Vendrell, European Union Envoy to Afghanistan, is interviewed by Lyse Doucet on BBC News 24's HARDtalk tonight.

United States aid to Afghanistan is set to triple in the shape of a $1 billion package to try to make the country a success before the American elections in 2004.

Meanwhile, Taleban forces appear to be regrouping and Afghan warlords - with a combined army of 100,000 - remain firmly in power.

When NATO forces take over peacekeeping in Kabul this month, will their forces reach beyond the capital?

Lyse Doucet talks to Francesc Vendrell who as both United Nations and EU Envoy has long been involved with Afghanistan.

How committed is the EU to Afghanistan and will it promise to stay with Afghanistan for the long haul?

HARDtalk is on BBC News 24 at 11.30pm today (Thursday 31 July 2003).
