Michael Aspel closes the red book for the last time

Michael Aspel announced that he was standing down as the presenter of BBC ONE's This Is Your Life last night.

He had just recorded a show with music mogul Simon Cowell.

Michael said: "I've been hosting the show for 15 years and I'm closing the book for the last time this evening.

"This Is Your Life has always been a great show and it's part of TV history. It's been a pleasure and a privilege."

BBC ONE Controller Lorraine Heggessey said: "Michael Aspel has done a fantastic job and created many memorable programmes with his red book.

"He continues an important role on BBC ONE as the presenter of one of our longest running and most successful programmes, The Antiques Roadshow."

Although Michael has now recorded his last This Is Your Life, there are plenty more shows to be seen on BBC ONE well into the summer.

The BBC recently asked Thames Television - who make the show for the BBC - to come up with new ideas to refresh the format.

But it remains hugely popular with the British public and no firm decision has yet been made on its future.
