HARDtalk - Dr Shatha Besarani

Dr Shatha Besarani of the Iraq Women for Peace and Democracy Campaign is interviewed by Tim Sebastian on BBC News 24's HARDtalk tonight.

President Bush has promised Iraqis that America has no intention of imposing its form of government or culture.

But he has also promised to ensure that all Iraqis have a voice in the new government and all citizens have their rights protected.

Among the groups clamouring for attention in the new Iraq are women - anxious to end their status as second class citizens.

Dr Shatha Besarani, an Iraqi doctor living in London who founded the Iraqi women for peace and democracy campaign, says women must fight for their rights now or they will never get them.

HARDtalk is on BBC News 24 at 11.30pm today (Thursday 15 May 2003).

All the BBC's digital services are now available on Freeview, the new free-to-view digital terrestrial television service, as well as on satellite and cable.
