Arts on BBC Television - Facts and Figures

The BBC produces and transmits more television arts programmes than
any other UK broadcaster.
•
The BBC broadcasts more arts hours in peak time than any other UK
broadcaster.
•
The BBC committed to a minimum of 245 hours of arts and music output
on its analogue channels in 2002/2003 (financial year): 45 hours
on BBC ONE and 200 hours on BBC TWO.
•
All arts output on the digital channels BBC THREE and BBC FOUR is
in addition to arts on BBC ONE and BBC TWO – it does not replace
it.
•
Spend on arts programmes this financial year across all BBC Television
channels is approximately £50 million – a significant
investment.
•
In 2002 (calendar year) the BBC broadcast more arts programmes on
its analogue channels than all the commercial terrestrial broadcasters
put together: 287 hours BBC, 282 hours commercial.
•
In 2002 (calendar year) the BBC broadcast 41 per cent more arts
hours in peak time than its commercial counterparts: 106 hours BBC,
75 hours commercial.

BBC's digital services are now available on Freeview,
the new free-to-view digital terrestrial television service, as well
as on satellite and cable.
Freeview
offers the BBC's eight television channels, interactive services
from BBCi, as well as 11 BBC radio networks.
