RADIO SHROPSHIRE

BBC raises Voices in Telford

An ambitious new BBC project is about to give a radio voice to the local community of Woodside in Telford.

From 17 March, BBC Radio Shropshire will spend three months broadcasting from Woodside as part of Voices - a national BBC venture that sees BBC staff working closely with local people giving them an opportunity to tell their own stories.

Voices in Telford focuses on Woodside, an urban neighbourhood currently undergoing regeneration. Combining on and off air activity the project will help raise the profile of the area and celebrate its strong community spirit.

BBC Radio Shropshire launch the project at Park Lane Youth Centre on Monday 17 March. The launch includes a live broadcast into Chris Ashley's programme (11.00am to noon) featuring people from Woodside and music by the Abraham Darby School Band.

The broadcast will be followed by a lunch prepared by Woodside Family Groups.

A weekly Voices programme begins in April on BBC Radio Shropshire, followed by a week of intensive broadcasting on the station in May, and culminating in a celebratory outside broadcast in Woodside on Saturday 21 June.

Michael Cleere, BBC Radio Shropshire Voices Producer, says: "It's an exciting project that we hope will really capture the spirit of Woodside through the lives and experiences of the local people.

"We'll hear from people who if it weren't for Voices may never be heard on radio, and we're aiming to make some practical and positive changes with the help of people in the area."

BBC Radio Shropshire broadcasts on 96, 95, 90 & 104.1FM.
