RADIO SUFFOLK

BBC Radio Suffolk increases in popularity with listeners

Independent figures released today (30 January 2003) reveal that BBC Radio Suffolk is proving even more popular with listeners in the county.

The latest Radio Joint Audience Research (RAJAR) figures show that on average 124,000 people tune in each week - that's almost 30% of all adults in the county and 24,000 more people than a year ago.

The station also increased its share of all radio listening in the area to 17.5%, up from 11.9% a year ago.

At the same time, listeners remained tuned for longer, listening for an average of almost 14 hours a week (13.56) compared to just under 12 hours (11.84).

BBC Radio Suffolk Editor Gerald Main says: "The figures show what a huge appetite there is in Suffolk for local news, local sport and local programmes.

"Mark Murphy's Breakfast Show is now Suffolk's most popular listen in the morning, and our match commentaries of Ipswich Town have brought footy fans flooding in to our Saturday Sports show."

Andy Griffee, BBC Controller, English Regions, adds: "BBC Local Radio goes from strength to strength. I'm delighted that in an increasingly competitive market, it has again more than held its own.

"Our local radio services are a precious part of how we connect with the communities we serve. We'll forge ahead with plans to maintain and build on this vote of confidence and I congratulate the talented and committed people who run BBC Local Radio."
