RADIO NOTTINGHAM

20,000 more listeners tuning in to BBC Radio Nottingham

There has been a jump in the number of listeners tuning to BBC Radio Nottingham each week, according to the latest official figures released today (30 January 2003) by Radio Joint Audience Research (RAJAR).

The figures show that 222,000 people now listen each week - an extra 20,000 listeners in Nottinghamshire compared to last quarter - and an extra 16,000 listeners compared to the same time last year.

The audience share has also increased, year on year, from 13.4% in 2001 to 14.6%.

Mike Bettison, Editor, BBC Radio Nottingham, says: "More and more people are tuning in to BBC Radio Nottingham which is really good news. It's the biggest audience the station has had for five years."

Mike adds: "These figures confirm that BBC Radio Nottingham's unique mix of local news, travel weather music and entertainment is as popular as ever.

"As we celebrate our 35th birthday (Friday 31st January) we can look forward to the next 35 years with great confidence!"

Andy Griffee, BBC Controller, English Regions, adds: "BBC Local Radio goes from strength to strength. I'm delighted that in an increasingly competitive market, it has again more than held its own.

"Our local radio services are a precious part of how we connect with the communities we serve. We'll forge ahead with plans to maintain and build on this vote of confidence and I congratulate the talented and committed people who run BBC Local Radio."
