Radio 2 presents The Sound of Movies a new four part series on music
composed for the silver screen starting Tuesday 11 February 2003.

Telling
the story of cinema music through the words of the composers themselves,
directors, film-reviewers, historians and commentators, the series
is illustrated throughout with original scores, examples of rare
film music and tunes that successfully made the difficult transition
from movie-theatre to concert hall.
The
first programme in the series explores the nature of film music
and the way it works on our psyche through adding mood or defining
place.
Through
conversations with directors and composers, we also look at the
beginning of the process in which a movie score is created.
In
part two, composers discuss the difficulties of juggling the demands
of their role both as sound-scape artists in their own right and
as part of a bigger collaborative creative effort.
The
penultimate programme examines the use of "temp music",
stand-in scores which directors work with when first cutting the
movie and the clashes this can cause later on in the post-production
process.
The
final part in the series looks at arranging and orchestrating movie
scores, the crucial choices that have to be made about instrumentation
and the relationship between the composer and arranger.
