Kevin Marsh appointed Editor of BBC Radio 4's Today programme

Kevin Marsh has been appointed as the editor of BBC Radio 4's flagship news programme, Today.

Currently editing World at One, Broadcasting House, PM and World This Weekend, Kevin will take up his new post towards the end of the month.

BBC Director of News Richard Sambrook said: "Kevin has a terrific track record of broadcast journalism including the outstanding leadership of the World at One through the last two elections and the launch of the highly original and succesful Broadcasting House on Radio Four.

"I am confident he can lead the Today team to new heights of original and distinctive programming so helping to drive forward the whole of the BBC's journalism whilst also bringing even more listeners to Radio Four."

The BBC's Head of Radio News, Stephen Mitchell, said: "Kevin's work over recent years with The World at One, PM and Broadcasting House is testament to his editorial flair and journalistic rigour, but he has also demonstrated a real feel for the demanding Radio Four audience.

"Taking on the Today programme is a natural next step and a really exciting prospect for the whole of BBC News and BBC Radio."

Controller of Radio 4, Helen Boaden, said: "I am delighted Kevin is taking over the Today programme. He is an award winning journalist with a proven track record and he knows and loves Radio 4. I'm looking forward to working with him in his new role."

Kevin joined the BBC as a news trainee in 1978 and, after working in Belfast and Birmingham, joined The World at One team in June 1980.

After a short spell at ITN Kevin rejoined the BBC as Deputy Editor of The World at One in 1987.

He was material in introducing Today presenter James Naughtie to the BBC - as the presenter of The World at One - and relaunching the programme.

In 1998, Kevin developed and launched Broadcasting House.

He was promoted to Editor of PM in August 1989, moved to edit World at One in 1993 before bringing the programmes together under a single Editor once again in 1996.

In addition to his four regular programmes, he has produced numerous specials for Radio 4 and has won three Sony Awards.

Kevin said: "I'm delighted to be trusted with the editorship of Today - it'll be a huge challenge. I look forward to the opportunity of editing one part of the day I haven't yet edited."

Born on 14 November 1954, he was educated at The Grammar School, Doncaster, followed by Christ Church, Oxford.
