BBC FOUR wins three Grierson Awards

The BBC was last night awarded with four Grierson awards at a ceremony hosted by Michael Palin and recorded for broadcast on BBC FOUR tonight (Wednesday 13 November 2002).

There was also a lifetime achievement award for David Attenborough, whose new BBC ONE series The Life of Mammals starts next week.

BBC FOUR was presented with three awards:

Best Historical Documentary for Ceaucescu: The King of Communism, which explored the Romanian dictator's extraordinary use of theatrical propaganda, directed by Ben Lewis (Little Bird for BBC FOUR);

International Documentary for Southern Comfort, the remarkable life of a female-to-male trans-sexual in the back woods of Georgia, directed by Kate Davies of Q - Ball Productions (BBC FOUR);

Joint Best Newcomer for This is Palestine/News Time, an account of film-maker Azza El-Hassan's own neighbourhood in Ramallah.

Roly Keating, Controller of BBC FOUR, said: "These awards are a fantastic vote of confidence for BBC FOUR in its first year. It proves that the best work on digital channels can now rapidly get mainstream recognition."

BBC TWO was presented with the award for Best Documentary on the Arts for Omnibus: David Hockney's Secret Knowledge in which the artist reveals the use of optical tools in European painting, directed by Randall Wright (BBC Specialist Factual for BBC TWO).
