Special edition of HARDtalk with Shimon Peres

Former Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres is interviewed by Tim Sebastian in a special edition of HARDtalk this weekend.

It will be broadcast first on BBC TWO at 9.00am on Saturday (2 November 2002) and will also be shown on BBC News 24 and BBC World.

Israel's political stability was thrown into turmoil on Wednesday when the Labor party walked out of the national unity government and the coalition collapsed. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is now working to build a new government.

Shimon Peres, the Foreign Minister and elder statesman of Israeli politics, was seen to be the moderating influence in Sharon's hardline cabinet. So why did he wait so long to resign, and why chose to go now?

In a HARDtalk exclusive Shimon Peres gives his first interview since walking out of government. It was recorded on location in Majorca today (Friday 1 November).

Following its screening on BBC TWO, the interview will be broadcast on BBC World on Saturday and Sunday and then on BBC News 24 on Monday.
