Ryder Cup hero Sam Torrance to take up the BBC mike at the World Matchplay Championships

Sam Torrance, the victorious captain of Europe's Ryder Cup team, will be commentating for BBC Sport during its live coverage of the World Matchplay Championships.

The BBC Sport commentary team will also be joined by former Ryder Cup captain Mark James and Solheim Cup star Laura Davis as well as regulars Peter Alliss, Ken Brown and Alex Hay.

Twelve of the world's best golfers will come head to head at Wentworth in what will be an exciting climax to the 2002 golf season in Britain.

Last year's winner Ian Woosnam will also be back to defend his title against a talent laden international field, but he faces stiff competition from South African duo Ernie Els - the defending Open champion - and Retief Goosen - the 2001 US Open winner.

Also playing will be Ryder Cup heroes Colin Montgomerie, Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington.

Live coverage of the World Matchplay Championships begins on Thursday 17 October and continues throughout the tournament on BBC ONE and BBC TWO, finishing on Sunday 20 October.

BBC Head of General Sports, Barbara Slater, said: "We're delighted to have Sam Torrance commentating for us during the World Matchplay Championships so soon after Europe's incredible victory in the Ryder Cup.

"Sam's presence will enhance a world-class BBC commentary team for one of golf's most exciting tournaments."
