New Sports Editor for BBC Sport Online

Alex Gubbay has been appointed in the role of Sports Editor for the BBC Sport website (www.bbc.co.uk/sport). Alex, at 25 years old, is one of BBC Sport's youngest editors.

A former editor of the award winning Leeds Student Newspaper, Alex started freelancing for Ceefax Sport in 1996 and joined the BBC full-time in July 1999.

He moved to Sport Online when it was created in May 2000 and was appointed a general editor in September 2001.

Alex was the BBC Sport website's correspondent at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

He also took a leading role in the site's output for the big summer of sport on the BBC, revolving around the hugely successful sites for the World Cup, Wimbledon, The Open and the Commonwealth Games.

He said: "The BBC Sport website is now the first stop for sports fans on the internet.

"The challenge now is to build on our fantastic progress over the last two years, and to help make the BBC's approach to breaking sports news and covering big events as interactive and innovative as possible."

Howard Nurse, currently Football Output Editor, has been appointed Deputy Sports Editor but will retain overall control of football output.

Both Howard and Alex will report to Ben Gallop, Editor of Sport Interactive.
