

Spectacular start to Commonwealth Games on BBC ONE
Nearly
nine million viewers watched the sensational Opening Ceremony of
the XVII Commonwealth Games on BBC ONE last night (Thursday 25 July).
Peter
Salmon, Director of BBC Sport, said: "The Commonwealth Games
is a fantastic competition and we're delighted that the country
has turned to the BBC for the big opener... now for the sport."
Commonwealth
Games Opening Ceremony (BBC ONE, 8.55 - 11.20pm) achieved a peak
of 8.9 million viewers (46.7% share) at 10.45pm.
Overall,
the two and a half hour programme was watched by an average audience
of 8.3 million, average share of 39% of the viewing audience.
This
figure is an increase on the slot average for BBC ONE of 4.5 million
and a 23% share.
The
Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games (BBC ONE, 12 September 2000)
achieved a breakfast-time audience of 3.5 million, with a peak of
4.6 million.
