Cochrane’s first outing with BBC, tomorrow at Epsom

Former flat jockey Ray Cochrane will join the BBC's racing team for a busy summer of flat racing which includes The Derby and Royal Ascot.

Ray's first win was on Romany Way at Windsor in 1974, and from there he went on to win 81 Group One races. He has won six classics including, most famously, the 1988 Derby on Kahyasi.

Carl Hicks, BBC's Editor for Racing, said: "We're delighted to welcome Ray on board. He has a fantastic knowledge of the game and great experience. As we saw on his appearances with us last year he is also a natural communicator and will be a great addition to our team"

Ray now works as an agent for Frankie Dettori and Jamie Spencer after retiring from racing in November 2000. He sustained injuries after a plane that was carrying himself and Frankie Dettori crashed, killing the pilot. Ray earned himself a Royal Humane Society award for bravery after having gone back to the burning wreckage and pulling his friend Frankie to safety.

His first meeting will be the Epsom Spring meeting on Wednesday 24 April but he will then stay with the team throughout the BBC's busy flat racing season.
