BBC PRIME launches in Poland with local subtitles

Warsaw, Poland: BBC PRIME launched in Poland yesterday with localised subtitles.

Program, the Poland-based channel distribution agency, has already secured distribution agreements for BBC PRIME with a number of cable operators including leading platforms MultiMedia and Stream. As a result, BBC PRIME will reach over 225,000 subscribers in Poland at launch.

BBC PRIME is now providing viewers with selected prime-time programming subtitled in Polish. Localisation is supplied by TTL (Television Translation Ltd) from London, working alongside local translation company Master Film Ltd in Warsaw. Feedback/Hill & Knowlton, based in Warsaw, are the PR agency representing BBC PRIME's interests in this key market.

BBC PRIME is celebrating its launch at an event in Warsaw at the University Library, along with leading Polish celebrities, distributors, press and opinion formers.

Wayne Dunsford, Director of Channels, EMEIA, BBC Worldwide, says: "Cable operators recognise the potential of an entertainment channel like BBC PRIME and will see it as a new way of adding value to their networks. BBC PRIME is using Polish and English subtitles to offer entertainment and education to the Polish audience. Poland is a priority market for us and we are very excited about this opportunity."

Launched in 1995, BBC PRIME is the BBC's international entertainment channel broadcast to Europe, Africa and the Middle East, via cable and satellite to over 11 million subscribers in over 100 countries and territories. BBC PRIME is also among the most popular Pan-European channels, relative to its distribution. The EMS 2002 survey showed that, in terms of weekly viewership relative to 24-hour home distribution, BBC PRIME ranks fourth among all Pan-European channels.

With over 2200 hours of new programming each year, including Parkinson, Top of the Pops, EastEnders, The Weakest Link and BBC LEARNING, the BBC's unique overnight educational service, BBC PRIME shows the best of the award-winning programmes from the BBC - the world's leading programme maker. Offering English subtitles for programmes including popular weekly drama series EastEnders, BBC PRIME also transmits many of its programmes with subtitles in Hebrew, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Czech and now Polish, (with other local languages in development).
