Bridgerton: Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan fashion style 'glow up' for season three

Bridgerton don come back, wit all im glamorous outfits, glittering ballrooms, and of course, gossiping aristocrats.

Di third season of Netflix period drama focus on di relationship between Penelope Featherington, wey Nicola Coughlan play di character, and her long-time crush Colin Bridgerton, Luke Newton play di character.

But away from tori of love and lust, fans fit don notice change in how both stars look.

Dem don undergo "glow up", Bridgerton costume designer John Glaser tell BBC News.

E tok say for seasons one and two, Penelope dey "young and insecure," and she dey forced by her mama to wear bright yellows and bright greens.

But in season three, she don become more independent, and start to dey wear colour like dark emerald green, as well as more muted tones. "e dey opposite as we e dey go."

"We also change her body shape to make her more mature, more sexy, less of child," Glaser add.

Meanwhile, di initial brief on Colin be say make im look younger dan im two older brothers, "so we keep im colour more youthful," Dougie Hawkes, associate costume designer on Bridgerton explain.

But in di new season, Colin just return from im summer travel across Europe.

"E return as man, so di evolution from di boy colour to di male dominant strength...na drastic transformation," Hawke tok.

As a result, Colin, wey dey wear paler shades like baby blue in di earlier episodes, e dey wear more striking hues dis time around, such as navy blues and browns.

Im cloth also allow for more movement and more of swagger, according to Glaser.

Based on Julia Quinn series of novels, Bridgerton dey set in di world of Regency London high society and centre around di influential Bridgerton family.

"So many times I find myself pausing to really check her gowns becos dem dey so fine, and dem dey so perfectly made for her," Rhimes tok inside press materials for di show. "e dey really, really beautiful."

Penelope don dey on "tremendous journey," Rhimes add: "I bin dey always love di character of Penelope. Di idea say she dey hide dis entire secret life dey amazing to me."

But Rhimes say Colin also undergo change.

"I feel say we dey watch Colin grow up dis season. E bin dey veri boyish, and dis season e don become man in so many ways," she tok.

"E bin dey abroad, e don learn some tins, and he don come back wit new attitude, but dat attitude really get tested as im feelings for Penelope grow."

On social media, fans don welcome Penelope new look.

"Penelope look like princess wit dis dresses in blue and green," one Instagram user write.

"Dat dress, di colours, dey so beautiful on her," anoda tok.

Coughlan, wey play Penelope, don tok say di transformation don dey "amazing" for her." e really make you feel so completely different wen you dey perform," she tok.

"For season one, I remember di late great [Bridgerton makeup designer] Marc Pilcher saying to me dat di notes wey dem get on Penelope she dey dowdy, and I completely make peace wit dat. But afta two seasons, e dey so nice to finally be wearing flattering things, and e really help di character.

"She don grow in confidence, and e help me grow in confidence, too."

Newton, wey play Colin, also enjoy im character development.

"E dey mature, e don grown up, e dey on di hunt for purpose. Im style don change, im confidence don change, e get dis element of swagger to im now," e tok.

E describe di last couple of years as "mad journey" eva since e find out im and Coughlan go dey at di forefront of season three.

"Finding out say we go dey do our love story and focusing on our book na really special moment," e tok.

Showrunner Jess Brownell tok say di makeova na "huge trope in di rom-com genre".

She compare Penelope transformation for season three to di iconic moment in di 1999 film She's All That, wia Rachel Leigh Cook walk down di stairs in red dress and dey instantly popular and beautiful.

She tok say dat period drama like Bridgerton don help younger pipo get interest in history, and also in Regency-era fashion.

"Di Regency vibe dey quite risqué, clingy, dem to show off di figure," she tok. "Fashion fir dat time still dey influence now. Na style wey dey come round again and again."

So Bridgerton viewers fit expect more scandalous attire in season three? Costume designer Hawkes tok yes.

"[Di series] don bring am in, and take am out, and e don bring am back in again. Certainly for season three, I tink viewers go see di return of di saucy Regency era," e tok.

"e dey quite debauched era."

Di first part of Bridgerton third season dey available on Netflix now. Dem go release di second part on 13 June.
