Name Sir Roger Bannister
Born 1929
Local link Lived in Oxford after attending Oxford University.
Achievements

Sir Roger was the first person in recorded history to run a mile in under four minutes. He achieved this on the Iffley Road track, Oxford, on 6 May 1954, in a time of 3 min 59.4 sec.

The same year he claimed gold at the 1954 Commonwealth Games in Vancouver.

Sir Roger Bannister then became a consultant neuro-surgeon and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford.

Additional facts A special 50 pence coin has been produced by the Royal Mint to commemorate the historic event.
