Carroll started as a maths lecturer at Oxford University and ended up spending most of his life in Christ Chuch, Oxford.

Achievements Lewis Carroll's most famous works are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There (1871), both famously illustrated by Tenniel.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland became one of the most popular stories for children (and adults) of all time.

Additional facts

He was a lecturer and tutor in mathematics at Christ Church from 1855 but shyness and a stammer meant that he lectured with some difficulty.

He invented the sticky mounts that stamp collectors use, a gadget for writing in the dark and a portable chess set!
