Brian, Margaret, Jean and Mary all live in Norton. It
is one of Jean's anecdotes which we have chosen to feature as it demonstrates
an inescapable fact of life: you might leave Yorkshire, but it will never
leave you!
In the audio clip, Jean relates an incident which happened
some years ago whilst travelling to South Africa. After making a comment
to a fellow passenger, she was immediately recognised as Yorkshire. She
says she felt surprised that she'd been identified, as the West rather
than North accent is the more well known. It turns out the passenger was
from York!

Jean: It'was my first visit to South Africa, hav a
son out there who's been there over 30 years. And ah got on a plane at
Bulaweyo t'go t'what was then Rhodesia.
An'the man sitting next t'me... y'had to fill in a
form. An at th'bottom th'was a place that said 'race'. So I sed "If
I sed 200 metres, d'you think they'll find it funny". He sed "No
they would not!". An' then he turned an'looked at me an'sed "You're
from Yorkshire aren't you?" Well... Ah haven't got the West Riding
accent which is the one which is usually considered... y'know all th'comedians
were th'West Riding ones weren't they?

Jean: (Pause) He came from York
Voices: (Laughter)
