Ghost Story Competition entry
Haunted house
Ushered Out
by Stuart Hunt

It was the end of a long night at the theatre, the performance was drawing to a close.

The audience applauded the actors as they walked off stage towards the dressing rooms. Once the audience had left, the cleaners began to pick up the litter and Hoover the floors. In the dressing rooms the actors were celebrating after a successful production of the play "An Inspector Calls".

After the actors had left the cleaners and the ushers all sat in a row at the back of the theatre.

They were all talking about the supposed ghosts of the theatre. They hadn't been seen for years. One of the ushers who had worked at the theatre for years was there when the ghosts were last sighted.

Suddenly there was a loud crash from behind the stage curtain. Two of the ushers went down to have a look but nothing had moved. So they went back to their seats and brushed the whole thing aside.

Then the lights went out and the whole theatre was pitch black. Everywhere was dead silent .. then a massive boom echoed through the building like big doors being swung back.

Laughter filled the ears of the employees. One of the ushers stood up only to be pushed back into his seat by and invisible force.

The whole row of seats began to shake. Then all of the chairs flipped down as if someone was sitting on them. Stamping on the ground and continuous laughter filled the place with noise. The employees got up and ran for the door.

The laughter followed them out the theatre as if it was showing them out. Only one person remained in the theatre. The usher who had worked there so long.

Then he faded away and as soon as he had done so, all the seats flipped back up .. the laughing stopped .. and the whole theatre fell dead silent.
