In November 2005 one of the YP&M web team visited
Buchenwald concentration camp and recorded a piece of
video. To mark National Holocaust Day, Friday January
27th, the footage has been edited and uploaded to the
web.
Buchenwald concentration camp is near Weimar, Thuringia,
in the east of Germany. "Buchenwald" is German
for "beech forest", since the camp is located
in Buchenwald forest.
The camp may not have the same horrific status as
the more notorious extermination camps such as Auschwitz,
however mass killings of prisoners did take place at
Buchenwald : some inmates died as a result of medical
experiments, such as typhus vaccine testing or were
victim to various barbaric methods of killing carried
out by the SS guards.
One of these, is vividly recreated at Buchenwald, and
is featured in the clip below : a medical examination
room is "altered" to provide the SS guards
with a peep hole, to shoot inmates in the back of the
neck, as they are duped into believing they are simply
lining up against a height measuring gauge. Click the
picture below to watch the video.
