Can I say a huge thanks to PJ Halahan and Glenn Bar on the recent memorial in Derry's cenotaph it was a success of the flying of the tricolor flag of Ireland to recognise the fallen heroes from Innishowen. This was the 1st time ever on this island.

They should also do a book on the war heros from Derry as they have ones for bushmills and ballymoney and coleraine.It would be a good thing for the people of this city both sides of the divide and both divisions (36th) and the (16th).

I think everyone should not forget about private John Meeke from outside Ballymoney who barged his way through no-mans land to save the life of Major Willie Redmond at Messines, getting shot twice and risking his life... this should be used as an example for us today to overcome the divide in this country Meeke a UVF man 36th Ulster and Redmond (mp) an Irish National Volunteer. What an occasion to be proud of are men together.

Can I also say well done to Tracy McGrory who soon will being playing at the Menin Gate Ypres for the 87th memorial service. She has played there a few times now. Me myself have laid wreaths at the gate for the last post in Belgium. What an experience.

My grandfather was at the Somme - Robert Thompson from Londonderry, how would I go about finding out more about him, his Unit his Medals etc ?

First World War Correspondence

My Father who was at the time a Church of Ireland Rector in Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone was accepted for service in 1918 with the YMCA as a chaplain/pastor and travelled to the front to Macedonia and then to the Island of Lemnos - a naval base. He sent letters home to his mum about twice a week of which I hold the bulk of them. They are an interesting account of his experience with details of his travels, places thinly disguised - in the latter part of the war and the aftermath. He was 40 years old when he returned to Ireland about Easter 1919.
