I recall early one Sunday morning (1959/60 - around 17/18 at the time) aboard my trusty steed (my bicycle) I started out on a jaunt. I always enjoyed cycling and as the day unfolded I found that I had cycled from Belfast to Antrim and then headed around the other side of Lough Neagh. By around 5 - 6 pm I was headed towards Lurgan, but noticed that there was a ferry going from a point (don't recall the name) across the tail end of the Lough. Saving me going through Lurgan, I made the ferry trip and from that point it was easier to head for Lisburn. The daylight was fading but I and lights, but I had developed a slow puncture and every so often I had to stop and pump up the back tyre. All went very well until I got into Lisburn town and the tyre would not take in any air. The "slow" puncture became a tear in the inner tube. So, I had to walk. It must have been around 8 - 9 pm. Walking along country, unlit roads was not to much bother then as the traffic was fairly ! light. But it was nearly midnight when I eventually wound my way up my street only to be greeted by Mother, Sisters and half the neighbourhood!! They were about to call the police and report me as missing!
I have always looked back on this experience with pleasure. But I was never able to work out the mileage from Belfast all the way round Lough Neagh and back to Belfast. Anyone any ideas? My own vague calculation is around 80 miles?? A mate and I tried to do the same trip some time later, but we got fed up some time after Antrim and headed home. Happy days ! !

When we were about 14 or 15 we decided to cycle to Lough Neagh, we were excited and a bit over-awded when we saw it in front of us. As we walked along the shore line I kicked something and when I picked it up it had coloured glass as we thought, in the bulbous head. After having a bit of a look at it, in my wisdom I decided to see how far I could throw it, even after all these years I still get upset when I think that I could have thrown away something that may have been of importance.
