Dungiven, John Moore of Bovevagh. Page five
Glenconway School is on Glenconway Road
which eventually leads to Glenconway Hill (253m) This
is peat (Turf) cutting area. On the day we visited,
we could smell the turf burning on people's fires. -
A lovely sweet smell. In past years, peat cutters have
come across crocks of butter which had been stored in
the bog on this hill centuries ago. When discovered,
the butter was solid and chalk-like. Some "Bog Butter"
from here is in the Ulster Museum in Belfast. Then there
was a mysterious mention of some tartan found buried
at Flanders. Never did get to hear more about that.
Must come back one day for more exploring

Metamorphosis of the old School In
the 1980's, Anna and Harry Logan converted Glenconway
School into a bungalow. And a very fine job they
made of it too. Doors changed to windows, windows
blocked up, porches removed - yes lots of alterations
to the old building. But they had the foresight
to take a photo of the school before starting
renovations. |
And here it is Sharon, your father's old school.

Anna Logan Anna told me that the
Master used to live in the left hand part of the
building and the school itself only took up a
single room on the right. I wonder how many pupils
there were? |
Ash Trees
Is there anything left on the site which goes back
to those school days? Nothing in the building. However,
the playground is now a garden but the trees are still
there. Two huge ash trees form an edge to what used
to be the playground. Ash can last for two hundred years
so there is a very good chance that wee John Moore from
Ardinarive use to play under these very trees.
