Ernest and Jessie, Sam Connor was my grandfather Tom's brother. My father William Connor just died in October 06, in Abbotsford, BC. He was the last of his siblings to go. At the funeral I learned that one of my cousins had compiled a bunch of family history while visiting Ireland and Scotland. This goes back to Sam's and Tom's parents, and includes bits on each family member. But, perhaps more to your interest is a collection of Sam's poem's, compiled by my late aunt Margaret. Some of them site Sam in Largy and some in Brampton, but I think Sam also kept writing to the Largy paper from Brampton. Very soon I'll get in touch with my cousin with the family info and get copies to prepare for my own future pilgrimage to the old country. I've no idea where to find "The Largy Ploughman." Contact me.

My ancestors lived in Catherine Street around 1831. The name was William Ferguson. Does anyone have any information on relatives or any history of the family? I would really appreciate any information.

I am interested in Rankin family from Limavady.

Mr. Adrian White - November '05
I am doing genealogy research on my family "White". Our family was from the Limavady area in early 1800's. John & Margaret (Glass) White - I believe they remained in NIRE.

Oldest son Marcus White & wife Eliza (Smith) White with 2 children (Joseph S. and Mary Jane) came to USA approx. 1841-1844. There were also 7 other children in this family of John & Margaret White. Names on request. Any help or guidance appreciated.

I am responding to Ernie Banting. I am his cousin, Jessie, and I know the book that he is referring to. His Aunt Marg, Violet's sister, is still alive and will be 93 on the 2nd day of December. I would like to hear from Ernie.

Hello my name is Kelly Anderson I have just read your caption and must tell u that I live in limavady and the `wilkinsons` chemist that ur grandfather once owned by the name Lawsons is now called `campbell`s chemist`.

Barry Elder - Aug 05
Ref. Lawsons chemist, when building a new house a couple of years ago I dug up a medicine bottle with the name lawsons of limavady on the side I was wondering if Donald Nicholl had any of these bottles.

Not meaning to change the subject being discussed, but I was conducting a search on "Google" to see if I could learn anything about my Grandfather Sam Connor who lived in the Limavady area before emmigrating to Canada around 1925 - 1930. I was taken to this page of the internet.

Sam Connor was married to my Grandmother Elizabeth and they had 9 children, one of whom was my Mother Violet who died a few years ago. None of the family remains and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about my Grandparents Sam and Elizabeth. When I was going through my Mother's belongings, I found a book of poetry entitled "The Largy Ploughman" and the poems had all been written by my Grandfather, Sam Connor. Unfortunately, the book vanished shortly after I found it and I've never been able to find another copy. I can recall as a child in Brampton Ontario Canada seeing poems written by my Grandfather that were published in a section of the local newspaper that was called "The Poet's Corner". I'd all but forgotten that he was referred to as the town's poet laureate.

Any assistance anyone can give me in finding a copy of "The Largy Ploughman" or any information that they can pass along concerning my Grandfather or any of his relatives would be appreciated.
Regards from Canada,
Ernest Banting

Re - The Ogilbys of Ardnargle, I have a book about horses, printed in Dublin in 1793, it is signed 'John Ogilby, Ardnar...1803' - it is on ebay at the moment!

William Stewart Ross Ogilby - July '04
My forebears lived in Limavady for three generations. John Ogilvie was a member of the vestry of Drumachose Parish in 1729. The name was changed to Ogilby by his son, Alexander, and the family lived on Catherine Street until John's great grandson, John, built the manor home at Ardnargle. A son of that John married a niece of Arthur Guinness II of the Dublin brewery and they brought their 3 young boys to America. I live in Florida.
It would be nice to find someone in the Limavady area with a background in local genealogy and who is able to correspond by email. If you know of any such, please let me know.

Donald Nicholl - June '04
My grandfather George Lawson was a chemist in Main Street Limavady until his death in 1938. The shop was then known as "Lawson's Medical Hall" and is now still I believe a chemist's named Wilkinsons. His daughter (my mother), one of three girls, married my father Donald Nicholl who lived up the Windrush Road at the crossroads in a cottage known as the "Ram's Horns" so called because there were two rams horns mounted on the gatepost. My father always told me that he put them there originally. I was born in Limavady and as a baby lived in the cottage with my parents and grandparents for a few months until my father joined the R.A.F. just before the war.

After the war we settled in England but I try and visit Limavady for a while once a year. I would be really pleased if anybody knows of anyone who might have known anything of my family. I intend to call for a pint in Frank Owens bar in Main Street sometime during my next visit to Limavady, sometime between Monday 14 June-21 June.

By the way George Lawson who died in 1938 was an elder in the presbyterian church at Drumachose and inside the church is an inscribed brass plaque to this effect.

Does anyone remember Lawson's Medical Hall or 'Ram's Horns' cottage? - Editor

Brings back memories, I worked in Robert's shop 1960. Was the air-raid shelter turned into public toilets? P.S left Limavady in 1963, been in Scotland since.

Gary Smyth - 12 May '04
Raymond, that is my grandfather in the shop, there are no corner grocery shops left in Limavady now, I`m afraid. Interesting to know you worked in Robert Smyth's shop. Do you ever return ? The shop is lying empty and I do think the air raid shelter was turned into a public toilet.

Raymond Connor - 14 June '04
Yes Gary, I do return. Not as often as I would like. Changed town ! Some good, some not so good.
All the best, Raymond.

Gary Smyth - 16 June
Raymond, very interesting to hear from you. Have you any stories to relate about your times working in the shop or any characters that you met, etc.

Raymond Connor - 16 July
Yes Gary, one character that springs to mind is my great uncle Joe Connor, brother of the largy poet, Sam. Joe came in for his messages every Monday, after spending most of the day in the Crown Bar, first thing ordered was a pound of cheese, stood in middle of the shop, ate the lot, declaring to all and sundry that Robert's cheese was the best cheese in Limavady. Yes one of God's characters.

Gary, are there family stories about the shop? It's lovely to have the photographs, but information and ancedotes to sit alongside them would be great. It would be nice to know a bit more about the man in the photo (your grandfather) and the shop - it would really bring it to life.
Does anyone else have memories of shopping or working in Robert Smyth's shop?
