Myself and my father have developed an unquenchable thirst
for information on the SMITHFIELD area of
Belfast, from the back entrance of where the Castlecourt Centre
now is as far as Clifton Street and CARRICK HILL.
My dad was born around this area and for many years was a
barman at MCGLADE'S PUB (later THE PENNY FARTHING and now
THE KREMLIN) in Donegall Street. During the school holidays,
I got my first work experience (washing and collecting glasses)
and soon learned that MCGLADES was where it was all happening!
It was full of journalists and musicians and media people.
I've been in London for about a decade and have only recently
been back. I'm interested in talking about this SMITHFIELD
/ TELEGRAPH / CARRICK HILL area and my dad remembers it all
in photographic detail while I'm lacking the visual fill-in
for his tales.
I was in SMITHFIELD maybe twice or three times in the mid-seventies
(buying the bits for a crystal set) before it disappeared
but the memory of its treasure trove of odds and sods stays
with me as I'm sure everyone who's been there will appreciate.
I'm a big fan of the current version of Smithfield.
Hopefully this could become a spot to share recollections,
pictures, anything about what I'd call Belfast's nerve-centre.

What great Craic about the districts.Especially the "HILL".
I was born and reared there. My mother was from Francis St.I
went to St Anthonys, Millfield started in 1948 at 4 years
of age left in 1952. The boys tachers (The Masters) names
were O Brien,O Shea McCarthy, Paddy McFadden (the best and
the finest). Miss O Doherty taught Babys and Senior infants.
We lived at 3 California St.I have seven brothers and three
sisters and my father all alive. My father is Paddy Austin
he was 99 last week. I am gone 30 years Im now in the USA.
I have the fondest memories and affection for the Belfast
pepole and especially the "Hill" North QueenSt,Sailortown. The
Half Bap Coates St ,The Bullring Millfield. God never made
finer people my best to you all. I hope this gets printed
. I sent an email a couple of years ago similar to this but
it didnt make the press.God bless you all. Geordy Austin.

Smithfield lives on, a bowl of soup ,selling old comics, buying
white mice.
As I got older it was the motorbike shop, cannot remember
it's name, bought my first Honda there. I feel lucky to to
have been in Belfast in the 1960s. Now I live in Toronto,
but the heartlives in Northern Ireland.

I was born on the junction of Carrick Hill and Clifden Street.
My mother was Maisie Deighan and she had a hairdressing business
above John Murray’s pub. My great aunt was Mary Farmer
who had a shop at 110½ Upper Library Street/Carrick
Hill. Before that my great grandmother Mary Kearney (nee Griffin)
had a shop at 77-79 Carrick Hill. My grandmother Elizabeth
Deighan lived in Trinity Street and then in Upper Library
Street. I am working on my family tree and would be grateful
for photographs or stories of these people?

I was born in Upton Street, my father was Freddie Holden with
brothers, Michael Eddie, William Josie and Sam with sisters
Mary and Kathleen, Aunt Mary was married to Robert Mallon
who had a fruit stall outside Joe Kavanagh's in Smithfield.
I have many happy memories of running all the way from Upton
Street to Smithfield with sausage and egg sandwiches and a
billy can of tea for my daddy and Uncle Robert then on a Saturday
at the end of the day sitting on hand cart as it was wheeled
back to the yard in Gresham Street for the night. Alos had
an aunt and uncle in Cal,ifornia Street, Maggie and Willie
Thompson.
Does anyone remeber Lizzie Loughrans shop in California Street?
I would like to know if anyone remembers the famil and better
still if they have any old photographs.
We lived in Alice Mc Ginty's house and my grannie Holden
lived in number 38 Upton Street, I used to be terrified of
Minnie Lightning!!

Re: The book Green Peas and Barleyo...
It was written by a great man from Carrickhill called Danny
Morgan. I would sit and listen to his stories for hours. We
were once in a writer's group together. I last seen Danny
a few years back, have to say he was very ill then. Hope someone
else can give more scope on Danny and how to get this book.

I came across the site by accident but the name Hackett in
your message came back to me in a flood of nostaliga. I lived
in Cinnamon street as a child and remember the Hacketts very
well.
Would I be right in saying that they lived on top of the pub
a the top of the street, Paddy and Kathleen? We lived across
the road in number 37 and our name was Loughran. I haven't
seen them in over 40 years but they were a wonderful family.

he lived on Stanhope St number 37. Any info on his mother

Reading through the messages from contributors from the last
six months, it seems that it should be called old Carrickhill
instead of old Smithfield as the site has been inundated with
messages about the place and people who lived there. I am
from Millfield as most of the previous contributors already
know but i'm now resident in Carrickhill.
I can help with some of the information people are looking
for but I would need time to go through each of them.
Catherine Brown, your uncle Robbie was well known and gave
us kids from the Smithfield area any fruit that was too ripe.
We would ask him "Any damaged fruit Robbie? He returned
the hand cart each night to Lennie Teague's yard not in Gresham
Street but in Winetavern Street behind Andy Crowes butchers
at the corner with North Street. He hired the handcart for
half a crown, We were only kids but Lennie let us hang about
the yard and even let us mind it for him while he went for
his meals in his home which was in McCrory's shop. He let
us push the Carts up to the blacksmith up at Durham Street
near Divis Street to bring back the wheel rims which he put
on the carts himself.
My uncle Jamesie Conalty used to push a cart to deliver second
hand furniture for Charlie Connollys of Smithfield. Both father
and son.
I remember lizzie Lougrans shop very well. We would make
excuses over before she closed each night just to hear the
late Maggie Bailey play the mouth organ and the spoons. The
craic was ninety. Lizzie moved to North Queen Street because
of redelopment in the area.
The John Mandeville Club was I believe the oldest club in
Belfast at one time. it was situated in Stephen Street. It
was run by the Brown Brothers who apparently inherited it
from their granda. Eventually Joe Brown ran it on his own
as Desi had his own bar and the other brothers who had worked
for O'Kanes undertakers, opened their own undertaking business.
It was a great and well run club with no hassle. we would
have played a game of cards in it for hours.
One of the stories about the place was that it once served
the fastest pint anywhere as it was alledged that the beer
was scooped up from a bath in a pint glass. Another wise crack
was that the Browns served you when you were alive and served
you when you're dead. The facade of the building is still
there but the inside was ripped out for storage space for
the Belfast Telegraph. They claimed the premises were theirs
and forced Joe to close. Joe died of cancer not too long afterwards.
Robert and Anthony also passed away. Desi owns the Tavern
bar which used to be called the Avenue.

hi has anybody any information on taits (tates) court? All
I can gather from street directorys is that it was off Millfield.
K MCCANN - February '08 Hello.Im doing a little research for my father-in-law
who was brought up in Corporation Street Belfast, then moved
into Unity Flats where he grew up - that then became Carrick
hill area - where until recently his mother still lived. Many
of his family are still living out in Belfast, and we do often
visit. ButI'm not getting anywhere on finding some information
on a pub that his grandfather once owned or ran. Basically
it is all barred up now ( when we pass) but it was once called
the Mandawville or something like that. All i can say its
near Libertys Frames -that was opposite the taxi Rank.
Does anyone have any chat on this old pub? I'm sure it comes
with many a story .
Any info on Corporation Street in the early to late 1950's-for
my father-in-law, Danny, would be great.Thanks.
I LOVE reading these storys ! !

Hi, I started in G.P.O.1960 as a telegram boy and I knew Carmel
Johnson who lived in Smithfield Square at the corner of Francis
Street, also Manny Sterling lived at 8 Garfield Street. We
used to go to dances at Clarke's in Donegal Street and the
Astor Ballroom in College Mews, they were the days of jive
and you held your partner. We didn't need drink then to have
a good time. After the dance if it was dry we walked home
to Andytown both the girls and boys. I was in in love with
one of the Andytown girls but nothing ever came to a head
and we went our separate ways, I sometimes wonder what if?
It is so good to read from exiles from Belfast and the memories
they have of this great city.

To Sheila Phillips. Altcar Street was in the Short Strand
area of East Belfast. It ran from Lisbon Sreet- to Mountpottinger
Road. I believe it disappeared under redevelopment.
I checked a 1957 street directory and there are 3 Murrays
at that time living in Altcar Street. Mrs. B Murray lived
at number 5 and Mr.James Murray lived in number 18, with a
Mrs. Edna Murray living in No. 22. I am wondering are they
the same Murrays who had relatives living in Winetavern Street
in the Smithfield area where i Came from?

I have found out about this site through my mate Emmanuel
Conway and it is everything he said it would be. My family
comes from the Carrickhill Johnston on my fathers side and
Deighan on my mothers side. I used to work in my grandfather's
fruits shop at the top of North St (Deighans) and remember
my forays to the old Smithfield market with the fondest and
warmest of memories, what a wonderland, you could spend your
whole day there, but my mammy would have given me a crack
round the ear as they say in our neck of the woods. I would
love to have seen old photos accompanying this site, to make
the journey complete.

Hi everyone, I was on the phone to my brother in Australia
on Saturday night, he has been in Australia for 34 years and
has never been home. He told me his son had come across this
site and printed out 7 or 8 page of comments for him, he said
it was very good reading brought back a lot of memories to
him he was reared in the Smithfield area. He has now passed
the comments to another Belfast family who came from the Carrick
Hill area so I thought I would let you know that our comments
are being read 12000 miles away from Belfast - I think it's
great.

Wee white mice, at the pet shop, Gresham street. Who can forget
Smithfield, hung a lot at the motorcycle shop as I got older.
Lots of memories, got married, came to Canada and here I am.
Belfast has changed but the memories never leave, no more
goldfish, no more hamsters, no more irish girls ha, ha. Where

Milliken (Tiger 90) Davy Daytona. PS - my dad owned the Wee

around Smithfield, Millfield, North street area. He also delivered
the 'tele' to houses in Samuel Street and Millfield, was aways
late Paddy did not come from this area he came from the Pound
Loney.
Emmanuel Conway - Nov '06
To JK, I and my 3 brothers Gerard, Danny and Paddy all sold
'Teles' for Paddy Lester. We would have to go from pub to
pub on Saturday nights looking for Paddy to get paid and if
we were stewed up (Papers over) Paddy would give us a couple
of coppers and the papers to sell on the way home. (Skinflint)
He could always be found in one of the bars in the Pound Loney.

Kelly, Kieran Maxwell, Herby McCartney,Davy Kearns, Eugene
Hale, Michael Duffy.
Patrick you left St. Anthony's 20th September 1966 and were
due to return on 28th Nov. But Didn't turn up until the next
day. I assume this was when you moved to Rathcoole.
Classes were of mixed gender in 1966 and some of the girls
names are Ann McMahon, Theresa Kane, Rita Parker, Rosaleen
Crawford, Mary McGivern, Margaret Black and the late Eilish
Russell.
I hope this will give you both and anyone else who reads this
something to talk about over a few beers.
John (Comber) - Nov '06
Eddie Havlin- what a great guy. He used to give talks to the
insurance company surveyors about locks and safes. He had
immense knowledge about security. Told a good yarn. Sorry
to hear he passed away.
Old Smithfield - I used to visit every Saturday with me Da
in the 60s. Hundreds of stalls. You could always find something
you didn't need but had to have. I also fondly remember Tommys
pet shop in Gresham Street, great wee man was Tommy. Kavanaghs
window was a great place to stare at. Generally couldnt afford
to go in there!
Joe Murphy - Nov '06
To JK, yes I remember Paddy and his dad Arthur, who sold papers
in West Streeet, both are now gone, sadly. Harry Mc Garrigle
sold papers at the Elephant Bar in North Street, sadly he
too is no longer with us. We used to sell 'teles' for Paddy
and Ulsters.
Thomas Irvine - Nov '06
Hi Theresa,
Nice to hear from you after all these years. I hope you and
your family are well. I haven't seen or heard from John or
Gerry since I left London for Australia in 1967. I came to
New Zealand in 1973 and, apart from 2 years in Rarotonga Auckland,
has been my home. If you get time it would be nice to hear
from you. Fondest regards, Tom Irvine.
John Parker - Nov '06

Hello, my granny was born in Samuel Street, and her two sisters
lived their until the early nineties when they had to move
out for the Castel Court developement. My granny's family
were the 'Matthews', Lily, Sally, Peter, Nelly, Joseph, Tommy
and there were probably more.
JK- Oct '06
Does anybody remember Paddy Leicester who sold the 'tele'
at the bus station?
Tony McGonigle - Oct '06
To EJ Havlin, we nicked the big yale key that hung over your
shop. the shop was near the record shop? we took the key round
to kellys cellars for a pint. This was in the early seventies.
Pat Clarke - Oct '06
To john parker.
Hello John, in response to your query I was born in 1957 and
was also in Mr McKennas class's and Mr Smiths. I'm currently
in touch with Geordie Meighan and he knows lots of old pals
whereabouts i'm currently trying to find Michael Duffy any
ideas?
Where did you live?
Margaret Fitzpatrick - Oct '06

called Roseleen Clarke who had asked if I remembered them,
it is hard to remember after 40 years but I did remember them
I now live in Carrickhill Kathleen and Elish Valliday also

you are talking to Phyliss you will pass this onto her my
name - in those days it was Margaret Conway.

J Parker - Oct '06
To Pat Clarke from J Parker, I can't remember you what about
my two older brothers Tommy and Pat Parker?
John Parker - Sep '06
John Parker to Pat clarke, I was born in 1957. You might have
known my older brothers Tommy and Pat and my sister Kathleen,
I used to run about with Paddy, Danny Madden, Alex Murphy
and Manuel Campbell. We were all in the same class in school
along with Gerard and Ciaran Maxwell, they where the good
old days and we will never see them again. It would be great
if we could get a reunion of all our old class mates. If you
get to read this Pat let me know who's class you where in
I was in Mr Mc Kenna's class.
Liz Brennan - Sep '06
Just happened to come across this site and was reading all
the emails when I spotted one about Geraldine & Phyliss
Doran from Ballymurphy. I know them well, their younger sister
Rita (who is also a twin) is my best friend. Geraldine has
lived in america since the early 70s. Phyliss lives on Black's
Road. They are still identical and still as lovley.

Fiona Perry - Sep '06
Hi
My family owned the leather shop at 37 Gresham St and I'm
pretty sure that it was in the family from 1823 (could be
wrong on that date). My grandmother was Hannah Gallagher,
she died in 1952 and then my aunt Minnie Gallagher ran the
shop. My aunt Annie had three bookshops, one in Union Street,
one opp. the Town Hall and the third was on the corner of
Gresham St opp. Smithfield Market. I was born in London but
I would be taken to Belfast for the summer holidays, and sometimes
christmas as well, by my mother Kathleen Maude Flude nee Gallagher.
I have wonderful memories of Smithfield Market & of eventually
being allowed to go there by myself & just wandering for
hours on end especially among the secondhand book stalls.
It was always my job to go and buy the milk and bread in Winetavern
St & I still don't think I have tasted soda or potato
bread to match it. The pet shop was a daily must and I always
spent a lot of time in with the Kennedy's, above the shop
at no 35. I wonder if anyone remembers my family and/or has
any info on my grandparents Hannah & (I think) Charles
Gallagher. Would love to hear from anyone with even the smallest
bit of info. Cheers Fiona.
Dana Madden - Sep '06

Hi, any information on Frank Spence, merchant seaman who socialised
in and around smithfield/1970/1980, his old friend M Sweeney
is enquiring. Thank you.
Margaret Conway Fitzpatrick - Aug '06
Hi Pat Clarke, I read your comments - you were asking on behalf
of your sister about the Doran twins and Paddy Doran the last
I heard of them was over 40 years ago they were living in
Ballymurphy but I will try and find out. You also mention
Barney Conway he is one of my older brothers but Sammy is
younger I wonder does Roselee remember Elish and Kathleen
Valliday. Maura Stanton who also lived beside St Anthony's.
Sadly some of our class mates have passed away, ask Roseleen
does she remember Miss Breenan and Mr Mc Kenna they were great
days we may not have had much but they were good days. I hope
to hear from you again, I myself am married I have 5 grown
up children 11 grandchildren 1 great grand child.
Pat Clarke - Aug '06
To Elish Mc Gartland / Margaret Conway.
My sister Roseleen is not online but she wants to know if
you remember the twins Geraldine and Philis Doran.
Also Barney Conway and Paddy Doran. she said you were in the
same class as her at St. Anthony's.
Pat Clarke - Aug '06
To Dana madden
I used to play with Paddy / Danny / Alex and Manuel .
We would go down to the Mill Dam and catch bees in jam jars,
we could often be found playing in West St Bus Station or
in the timbers in Wilson Street (an old demolished building
behind the pub on the corner of Millfield / Wilson Street
we all wore shorts in those days and our socks were always
around our ankles, me and Danny always had runny noses and
were always being told that the snotters were tripping us.
Unfortunatly we moved away when I was about 12 and lost contact
now in later years you look back and try to rekindle your
childhood friends and find its too late.
Kathleen murphy will give you my e mail address.
Please keep in touch, Pat.
Emmanuel Conway - Aug '06
To E.J. Havlin Deepest sympathy to yourself and your family

interesting to see so many names of people and places that

To Pat Clarke
I was just browsing and came across the correspondence between
yourself and my good friend John Parker. He informed you of
the murders of my brothers Danny and Paddy Madden, and the
deaths of our good friends Alex Murphy and Emmanuel Campbell,
we all attended St. Anthony's P.S. Millfield. Alex was a pall
bearer of Paddy's coffin when his remains were returned to
the family home on Tuesday 4th July and died of a broken heart
on the 5th. Paddy and Alex were best friends.
Pat I remember when you came in and out of our house at 30
Millfield. Alex and I organised a Smithfield re-union and
photographic exhibition about 5-6 years ago. We got lots of
photos of your neck of the woods Letitia/Wilson Streets as
well as 100s of others. Emmanuel Campbell Died in May 1987.
Danny Corr, I remember you when you lived in Millfield, down
near St. Stevens Church. During our research into the people
and places in Smithfield we were able to attain many of the
old roll books from St. Anthony,s which were on display at
our exhibition.
Jennifer Crawford - July '06
Can anyone tell me how the name Peters Hill originated?
Thanks
JB
Eilish Mcgartland - July '06
I am 59 years old and was reared in Alton Street Carrick Hill
and attended St Anthonys Millfield. I remember Miss May and
Miss Nora McDermott with great affection, most of all I have
great memories of the people of Carrick Hill, and all the
great characters Jump Jimmy Jump, Ructions, Jimmy Duffin to
name but a few, happy days, to me it's still the best city
in the world and Carrick Hill was its jewel.
Pat Clarke - July '06

Patrick Lavery - June '06
I remember fondly as a young fella in the late 60s wandering
around the old Smithfield Market. It was like an Arabian Bazaar
and to a child was an amazing place. Harry Hall's bookshop
was a big draw as I loved the American Superhero comics and
the Magic Box was well 'Magic'. I also loved the little out
of the way shop that sold war memorabilia. My Dad, also Patrick
Lavery was from 21 Balaclava Street so Patsy McCann you would
probably know the family. I would also love to know of any
books or photos of the old place.
Pat Quinn - June'06
Pat Quinn late of Bombay Street. This is a faciniting site

Or relatives living in Boomer St off Divis st?
Richard Green, pleasanton, CA USA - May

Dear all,
I am trying to find any photo's of the area of Millfield and
in particular the pub at 24 Millfield. This was my great grandfather
- Michael McKeown. They owned the pub about 1925 to 1930.
If any one has the name or details.
Joe Hodgkinson - May '06
When I was a"wee" lad my brother Frank would take
me to Smithfield on a Saturday to buy me a jigsaw puzzle,
I loved to poke around Kavanaghs. This was probably in the
late thirties. Now I'm in my late seventies(79) and spend
my time between N. Y. and Florida.
D. Curry - May '06
I know a member of the McMurray family who may have some old
photos of the shop in North Street, his name is Ken and he
can be found in the telephone directory under McMurray cars.
His Dad died about 4 years ago but was in the car showroom
one evening when I was buying a car and he told me his family
had run the shop for many years. Try asking as I'm sure the
family will have kept records and photos etc. good luck.
Pat Clarke - May '06
To paul connely, jan o6
hi paul i would be very interested in old photos of the hill/millfield/smithfield
as i have no photos of where i was brought up.
Brian - April '06
Hi Paula and Danny CORR. I'm doing the family tree and have
CORR connections from Pinkerton Street, and wondered whether
either of you are connected?
My CORRS were connected to MADDEN from the same area.
Many thanks
Brian
Margaret Rankin - April '06
Do any of you remember the wee stew shop bottom of north st
what a feast for sixpence a whole bowl of stew those were
the days my friends. Then into next door eve's hat shop for
a pair of earrings for the dance on saturday. That bowl of
stew was very welcome after trekking round Smithfield.
John Parker - April '06
I went to st anthonys, i live in unity flats, i went to school
with joe and alex murphy and angel pat torley they were good
old days.
Danny Corr - March '06
I was born and bred in Millfield, went to St Anthonys, and
have so many happy memories of the place, and the people,
does anyone remember Charlotte's fruit stall at the Francis
St end of Smithfield Market? she would sell us 1 pennyworth
of "damaged fruit" on our way to the Central picture
house, better known as the "flea pit" had my hair
cut in Davy Swindles barber shop, beside the Central, loved
watching the older guys getting a " B Bap " and
then he would singe the top of the hair with a straw, also
spent a lot of time staring through the window of the Magic
Box. I have lived in London for 36 years and have not been
home for 14 years, but I will always have the memories to
keep me going.
Patrick Clarke - Feb '06
R.E Joe Murphy 24 June 2004. I used to go to school with Joe
[St. Anthony's].
I was born and bred in Letitia st. [off Millfield] (Now long
gone). We had Jimmy Higgins shop,m Mooney's pub, Pat Carrolls
pub and The Curlies, who used to rent out handcarts to the
market traders and rag/bone men. You can find me on Friends
Reunited/ St. Anthony's School.
Angel Torley - Feb '06
I live at 5, Winetavern Street and have done all my life,
My grandmother was born here in 1911 her name was Annie Fields.
We are the last of the original families now left in the area
and hope to be here for a long time to come. Four generations
of our family attended St Anthony's school on Millfield. My
mothers name was also Annie Fields before marrying my dad
Brian Torley. We have seen so many changes over the years
to the area. Sadly Castle Court has ripped the heart out of
what used to be a fantastic place to live and we so miss all
our old neighbours..
Paula Corr - Feb '06
Re - Mary Jane Burns.
Trying to do my family tree..does anyone know of or related
to Mary Jane Burns died, in child birth 1883. lived at 31
Arnon street Belfast. She was married to my great great grandfather
Peter Mc Phillips. Any info welcomed.

Paul Connolly - Jan '06
My family are the Connolly's who came from Carrick Hill. I
have some good stuff at home if anyone has an interest in
the area.
The Granda (Tommy) was a bookie and hired out bikes 'Connolly's
Crocks' - leave a message if you need more info.
Berni Muller - January '06
I worked in McGlade's for a couple of years, under my aunt,
Kitty McGrogan, who was a supervisor (at the time. John Hart
who died tragically in McGlades, was the manager). Eilish
was the cook. She cooked a mean fillet steak, topped with
tinned mushrooms!! and if you were lucky, you could shake
the brown vinegar (brandy) into your coffee, when you were
on a break. Gerry Fitt et al were regulars. It was a great
time.
Jim Quinn - January '06
It was great fun reading this, my recollections of the area
go back to the fifties and VERY early sixties, when Smithfield
was a useful place to "mich " off school when it
was raining, up until the oxford snooker hall opened later
in the morning. Some of the people mentioned in the various
articles would play snooker in the Oxford at lunchtime, it
was great as a 15 year old to listen to their banter, it would
make a priceless recording if only ....
Marko - Jan '06
...Jim are you writing a book about the area?..I've a wealth
of information about the place...have you written any other
books about there?
Gerald Franklin - Dec '05
My grandmother, Ellen Trainor (nee Dawson) and aunts ran Dawsons
furniture shop in the old Smithfield market. I was brought
up in London, but for all the 1950's we went back to belfast
(and Ardglass) for our summer holidays. I loved helping in
the shop and remember most of the names mentioned here. A
trip to the Gresham Street pet shop was always a must just
to look round. Opposite our shop was the Central Cinema (I
think that was the name) which used to be Dawsons Wholesale
Ironmongers, my grandmothers family firm. My grandfather,
Jack Trainor, managed the National Club in nearby Queens Street
until he died in the 40's. I have very many happy memories
of those times. I was so sad when I heard it had burt down.
Rosemarie Farrell - November '05
My Grandmother was Rose Hamilton of the Hamilton clay pipemakers
in Belfast. She left Belfast for Scotland and was so ill on
the journey over that she never returned home. She met and
married my Grandfather in Glasgow and they had five children
who in turn provided them with seventeen grandchildren of
which I am one. I would dearly like to know more about the
family if anyone can help.
Barney Donnelly - Nov 05
I was born in Regent street the hill area. I went to St Patricks
school, moved from Regents street Ballymurphy. I remember
as a kid going round old Smithfield and I used to sell papers
round the town and in the market area with my dad and my brothers.
At 17 I went away to England and I'm still now living in London
over 40 years later. I still go back to Belfast to see my
brothers and sisters that live in New Barnsley, Moyard. When
I come back home each year me and my brothers have a we dander
round town and have our few drinks.
Thomas Irvine - October '05
(formerly Stanhope St, Carrick Hill.)
I attended st anthony's school mill field 1945-53 and i left
belfast jan 1960 but i still have vivid memories of smithfield.
Browsing the market was a regular occurrence and walking toward
the market from samuel st past the bus station the first thing
you seen was joseph cavanagh on the roof, and if i remember
correctly his slogan was (i buy anything). I remember the
teachers at the school, i don't recall the name of the lady
teacher but the hm was mr o'brien and misters o'shea, mc fadden,
mc carthy and rooney.

Hey, I'm doing some research on the Union Street/little donegal
street area. Any information as far back as possible would
be greatly appreciated from anyone.
David Murphy - August '05
I worked in McMurrays in North Street for five years, starting
in 1983. I loved the shop, the staff, and working in that
historic old area. Does anyone know where I can get photos
and articles about the Store?
E J Havlin - July '05
My family still run their business in Smithfield. My father
Eddie was the 'Key man in the Safe business' as Havlin's locksmith
developed from the market stall to the permanent shop fixture.
I've just finished a dissertation on the effect of the fire
in 1974 on the Smithfield community & have been lucky
to spend some great time with the colourful characters of
that era. A very different time.
Stephen Montgomery - July '05
My Grandfather William and his sons owned and ran the Montgomery
pet shops in Gresham Street, Peters Hill and on the Falls
Road. My father and his brothers all took turns in working
in the shops over the years till finally only Gresham Street
remained opened, till a few years ago.
Even during the darkest days of the troubles the pet shop
remained opened and was also badly damaged in various bomb
attacks. The end came with the redevelopment off the area
with Castle Court.
Louise Killen - July '05
Peter Hall, U can get lots of pictures of smithfield and carrick

helps.
Peter Hall - July '05
My father ran harry halls bookshop for 40 years, and i also

My father, Jimmy McLaughlin, delivered milk (Kennedy's) in
the 50's and 60's around Smithfield area - including Hamil
St, John St, Institution Place. I used to help him at weekends
and vividly remember Smithfield Market - an absolutely magical
place!
Jacquie Allen - March '05
I am currently researching information about my grandfather
who I believe had a shop/s in the Smithfield area of Belfast
in the 1920's - 30's. He was a master confectioner and made
his own sweets on the premises. Later he lost his shop and
made his sweets at home and transported them to shops around
Belfast in a van or later on his bike. His name was Ernest
Francis. If anyone has any recollections they would be very
gratefully received.
Denis Cooke - January '05
My father was born in 11 Winetavern street, his name was Charles
Cooke. There were 6 in the family and the last one to live
in 11 wintavern street was mollie adams. She died in the 60s'.
Next door in number 13 were the Kavanaghs. My fathers mother
Jane was one of the Hamiltons who were famous for making clay
pipes that were sold all over the world. There is a page on
winetavern street in the book As I Roved Out by Cathal o Byrne.
I have visited the P.R.O in Belfast and established that there
was a Hamilton in Winetavern street since 1829 and the last
record was in 1929. When clay pipe making was big business
there were a number of families making them in the street
ad there was also a factory in Bathgate street off Durham
street also run by a Hamilton. I am keen that the name Pipe
Lane be retained in any future development of the area. I
also hope that the last remaining householders rights are
respected. How about a reunion of all interested people soon

My father owned the Smithfield Pet Stores. I worked there
for a while when I was a kid. I've been away from Ireland
for about 40 years. My brother here in the states could give
you all the information you need about it. He has a photographic
memory.

Does anyone recall the pet shops in the Gresham St area of
Smithfield? Montgomerys, Murphys, Creightons. Harry Hall,
Joe Kavanagh, Cecil Creighton, Tommy Lennon, Eddie Havelin
were just some of the shopkeepers in Smithfield. I recently
read of a mill disaster in Winetavern St in the 1800s.

Further to my message posted last night, I was thinking of
all the public houses in and around the area - the Elephant,
the bus bar, the Elm [McLaughlins], the Kingsway, Maddens,
Peters, the Cloraine, Carrols, the Avenue, the Brown Horse,
Campbells and many many more .....

I am 48 years old and was born and reared in Samuel Street,
Smithfield. I left the area approx 20 years ago and moved
to nearby Durham Street. I worked in a fruit shop in Winetavern
Street after school and at weekends. My school was St Anthonys
in Millfield. We used the old bus station as a playground.
Our house was badly damaged when the bus station was bombed
in 1972.
If you try www.rushlightbelfast.com there is a lot of info
about Smithfield and Belfast in general.
