I was born in belfast and lived at 21 new andrew st, Sailortown. I left in 1957 to come to England where I have lived ever since. My thoughts of my home never left me - playing marbles at the top of the street, playing "rallyo" round the streets and so much more. Reading Gerrys stories brings it all back to me, although I have not seen the demoliton of my home.

I really must go home one more time, God bless all who lived there.... paul keenan

To Lily Denvir: I too am grieving at the loss of our church, Holy Family on the Limestone Road. My father and mother were married there on Pancake Tuesday 1918 and my four sisters and I all were baptised, received first Communion, Confirmation and were married there.

On my way back to Canada in September 2005 I bought The Irish News at the airport and was horrified on opening it to see that the last Mass in Holy Family was to be the following Sunday. What made it worse was that a few days before I had taken a trip to see what Castleton Gardens and the park looked like but missed going to the church. Anyone with last pictures of it, I would appreciate. I have such happy memories of it, and of my schooldays at Holy Family School.

I'm trying to access Sailortown (Cultural/ Historical ) Society website can you oblige? One of the many O'Hara descendants of Ship St. Altough a generation removed, I can still remember the names having also waited many a docker in the Dockers some 20 years ago. I can also remember my granny's old house.

Brain Denvir - January '05
My name is Brian Denvir, I live in Australia and lilly is my cousin and I thank her for that little bit information. It's good to hear from you. Brian.

Gerry Gallagher - September 2004
Nice to hear from you Lily. I remember your family living just down the street from me. I can still picture your father walking past our door on his way to the dock to do a days work.

As you say the houses have gone but people's memories are still alive and the fight to preserve St. Joseph's Church goes on, with worshippers still on the street each Sunday morning at 10.00am, some three years after its closure.

Lily Denvir - July 2004
My name to all the people of Sailortown who knew me when I lived there is Lily Denvir, of 15 New Andrews Street. Part of me died that day when I too had to leave the area that I knew and loved so well. When I look at it now and how much it has all changed, it makes me feel so sad inside that I and all the other people from Sailortown could have had their happy childhood memories taken away from them, for motorways and car parks, how could they have done this to us.

My 5 sisters my Mum, Mary Eillen and my Dad, Thomas, who was known to most as being Toatsy, all lived in a 2 bedroom house. We had so many happy and wonderful childhood years in that house. As if it isn't bad enough that they took our homes from us they now want the most beautiful chapel that I was baptised, had 1st communion, confirmation, was married and had all my children baptised in too. How I would love to see it all back again and I'm sure all the rest of the good Sailortown neighbours and friends would agree with me on this too.
