Armagh Railway Disaster - your responses...
Marion E. May nee McArdle - July '08
How interesting and I wonder if my grandfather was involved
or any of my relatives. His name was PHILIP ( or RICHARD)
MCARDLE from CROSSMAGLEN ARMAGH and he was a railway engineer.
At some point he moved to DUNDALK married and subsequently
had 4 children, the eldest of which was my father DENIS RICHARD
b.1917.
I would be grateful for any information as I'm finding records
sparse and difficult to find.

Amazing, another great grandchild of Samuel Steel found the
site. James Steel & family of St.Catharines will be going
to Armagh in 2009 for the 125th. Perhaps another branch can
join in.

I am looking to obtain a list of the victims of the tragedy.
I have discovered that my great aunt was one of the victims.
Her name was Margaret Gibson. I do not know what age she was
when she died.

Is there not a memorial in the city to remember the dead and
if not why? a lot of people were killed and should be remembered.
Pat Smith (USA) - April '06
James Steel, above, and I must be cousins, as Samuel Steel
was also my great grandfather. My grandfather, Harry, was
one of the two youngest children in the family who had stayed
home with their mother that day. I had heard about this tragic
accident as part of family history, and it has been great
to be able to use the web to find out more about it.

I live beside where the crash took place, I often look over
the lines and think about all those poor adults and children
who died as a result of greed. My prayers go out to them all.

My great grandfather, Samuel Steel, along with his two daughter's,
Sarah and Ethel and niece Hetty Wolfe died in the wreck. My
grandfather, Robert James and his brother Samuel Maxwell survived
having been in one of the coaches which were towed up the
incline.

My father used to tell me about this as his dad told him.
My dad was born in Armagh in 1894, burried now in Kildarton
churchyard.
