Douglas Cooper: RAF service during World War II

war planes

When Douglas Cooper joined the RAF in the 1930s it was for him a dream come true. Then war broke out and his dream changed as he found himself flying bombers over Germany. Douglas has since become friends with a German pilot who was involved in attacking his plane during the war. "He was only doing his job", Douglas says.

Douglas was eventually captured. In one of the camps he spent time in, he was involved with an escape attempt where a tunnel was dug under a wooden vaulting horse. (This story has since been immortilised on film). Your Place & Mine reporter Paul Moore spoke to the Strabane man about his wartime experiences. (Broadcast on Saturday 26 June 2004)
