Pledge to boost a woman's place
From BELFAST TELEGRAPH November 7th, 2000
THE Northern Ireland Executive is to give women a helping hand to play a
fuller role in business and the community. The pledge came from Dr Sean
Farren, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Training and Employment
at a conference attended by more than 200 delegates. He said: "In today's rapidly changing global economy we cannot afford to ignore the skills, talents and abilities of women. We have made important strides in recent years to ensure that women do get the opportunities they deserve." "Barriers that once existed are being overcome, but we cannot afford to stand still. Equality and social inclusion are essential to a healthy society and I believe the new Executive will help ensure women get their chance to play a full and active role in shaping our future." Opening the event, Joan Harbinson, chief commissioner and chair of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, said: "Training is an equality issue. Women do not have equal access to training whether provided by the government or employers." "If we want a highly skilled workforce and a more equal society, women have to have an equal chance to develop their skills." |
