Recommissioning
the equality agenda.
From PARLIAMENTARY BRIEF July 1st, 1999
Of the companies registered with the Commission, almost 3,000 employ 50
or less employees, and these account for over 26% of the total monitored
workforce. Equality - Priority in a new Northern Ireland. The record so
far in the fair employment field has been of steady progress towards a fairer
society for Northern Ireland, and the prospects for the future will be greatly
increased if they can be viewed in the context of economic expansion and
political stability.
The development of new structures and the extended reach of anti-discrimination
legislation have given the equality agenda a unique and challenging priority
within Northern Ireland society. The new Equality Commission is now well
placed to build upon the work of the past two decades and ensure that everyone
in Northern Ireland has the opportunity to participate on an equal footing
in the economy and the community. |
