Would the SDLP ever fly a nationalist flag?

From IRISH NEWS July 25th, 2000

They claim that only symbols of Britishness can be displayed. Furthermore, if asked how they intend to give recognition to the Irish identity, their response is silence and they reject any attempt by nationalists to raise the issue.

Welsh and Scottish symbols can be displayed alongside British ones in England after the setting up of new institutions in those countries. Furthermore, this was done at the outset of new political institutions being created in those countries. The unionists attempt to veto Irish symbolism is just pure unadulterated bigotry on behalf of unionism.

They seem to want to fight tooth and nail to stop nationalists expressing their identity. It is therefore important that we focus on what is stated in the GFA in relation to symbols and emblems and the need to ensure that such symbols and emblems are used in a manner which promotes mutual respect rather than division.

Sinn Fein have put forward one possible way of resolving this issue. The SDLP now need to demonstrate that the issue of flags and emblems will be addressed in such a way that mutual respect is shown for the Irish identity and culture. Up to now that has not been the case. Councillor PAUL BUTLER, Lisburn borough council
