GAA badge provokes DUP protest

From NEWS LETTER August 19th, 2000

A DUP Assembly member has complained to his local health trust after one of its buses was spotted displaying a GAA badge on a rear view mirror. Newry and Armagh MLA Paul Berry said that the display of a Co Armagh emblem on a transport bus belonging to the Armagh and Dungannon Trust was a clear breach of the Flags and Emblems Act. ''The fact that the Armagh GAA are entering semi-finals in a competition cannot be an excuse for making people who have no association with an organisation, which excludes under Rule 21, the participation of security force members, feel insecure while on the bus. ''If a Rangers scarf had been on display there would have been an absolute uproar,'' he said.
