Sheringham was once a tiny fishing place known
as Sheringham Hythe and most people lived further inland at the
village of Upper Sheringham.
In the 1880s the railway arrived, bringing people
and money to the area. Crabs and lobsters are still brought ashore
by a small number of commercial fishermen.
Sheringham Beach
The beach appears at low tide. Sheringham has a stony beach
that disappears at high tide, but at low tide, an expanse of sand
and rock pools is revealed. The beach is managed by North Norfolk
District Council.
The beach has toilets, beach huts and a public
shower. There is easy access to cafés and amusement arcades.
The North Norfolk Steam Railway is a ten-minute
walk from the beach. The Splash Leisure complex is along the A149
Weybourne Road.
Sheringham has a golf course and the town centre shops are close
by. The Little Theatre is in the town centre. Lifeguards are on duty from spring bank
holiday weekend to the end of the school summer holidays in September.
There's also a first aid point.
Sheringham has free on-street parking and
parking close to the beach.
Toilets for people with disabilities are available.
The ramps on to the beach may not always be usable because of changes
to the level of the sand.
There are no disabled parking spaces.
