Spain beat Argentina to win World Cup: 5 things you need to know about the final

Spain won the World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in a tense final in New Jersey.

Former Manchester City player Ferran Torres scored the winner at the start of the second half of extra time, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

Argentina played extra time with 10 men after Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez was sent off in 93rd minute after picking up a second yellow card.

The final brought the biggest World Cup ever to a close, after more than a month of football featuring 48 teams from around the world.

The result means Spain have now won the men's Fifa World Cup for the second time.

Their first success came in 2010, when they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final.

Spain have also become the first team in history to hold the Euros and World Cup at the same time on two separate occasions.

Many football experts believe this talented squad could challenge for more major trophies in the years ahead.

And it means they become the first nation ever to be men's and women's world champions at the same time.

This year's tournament was the first one in history to stage a Super Bowl-style half-time show.

It featured plenty of huge names such as BTS, Shakira, Justin Bieber and Madonna.

While the mid-game break is usually for players to recover, coaches to give a team-talk and fans to buy food and drinks, this time it was extended to allow a mini-concert to take place.

It meant the half-time interval lasted 27 minutes, making it the longest half-time in football history.

After the game lots of prizes were handed out to the top players of the tournament.

Manchester City's Rodri received the Player of the Tournament award.

He is one of Spain's top players when it comes to controlling the game from midfield.

Even though he is not always the player scoring the goals, Rodri's work can make a huge difference to how Spain play.

Rodri was also named Player of the Tournament when Spain won Euro 2024, showing just how important he is to his team.

Even though he wasn't there to collect his award, it was superstar striker Kylian Mbappé who came out on top to become the 2026 World Cup's top scorer.

After a close race all tournament, Lionel Messi's failure to score in the final, meant Mbappé's two goals against England in the bronze match were enough to finish as top scorer.

The France captain netted 10 goals in eight games to edge out Messi, who scored eight.

Mbappé becomes the first player to win the Golden Boot award twice, and is also now the men's World Cup all-time top scorer with 22 goals - one ahead of Messi.

19-year-old Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsi received the award for the tournament's best young player.

He was an important part of Spain's defence that only let ONE goal in all tournament - and restricted Argentina to just two shots in the final, with none on target.

Cubarsi played every single minute for Spain in their eight matches at the tournament.
