A man has died after his motorbike was involved in a crash with a lorry on a dual carriageway in Merseyside.

The rider in his 40s came off his vehicle in the crash on the East Lancashire Road by Haydock at about 23:00 BST on Monday.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and driving while unfit through drugs, Merseyside Police said.

The eastbound carriageway of the East Lancashire Road has reopened since the crash while a section of the westbound carriageway remains shut to allow for ongoing investigative work, the force added.

A 28-year-old man from the Widnes area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and drug driving offences.

And a second man, 38, from Carmarthenshire, has also been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and driving while unfit through drugs.

The crash happened on the westbound carriageway between Penny Lane and Kenyons Lane South.

Police said two heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are believed to have been involved, one directly involved in the crash while the second may have been involved in the build-up, police said.

Both HGVs were towing white trailers - one cab was dark in colour and the other was white with black stripes.

Det Sgt Andy Roper said: "Our thoughts are with the man's family at this incredibly difficult time.

"An investigation is ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time to check their dashcam footage for anything that may assist our enquiries, including footage of the collision itself or the moments leading up to it."
