A charity which has raised £1 million in 12 months to go towards a new treatment centre has said that it shows how much the local community wants the building.

Lingen Davies Cancer Support raises funds to enhance care and treatment for cancer patients at the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre, based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, as well as funding various other projects.

The charity set itself the challenge of raising £5 million by 2029, to create a new centre at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), but was aiming to reach the first £1 million by its 47th birthday on 5 June.

It's chief operating officer said the milestone was the "best birthday present".

"To have reached this monumental amount so soon after launching the appeal is a wonderful achievement and really highlights how much our community wants and needs the new dedicated cancer centre in Telford," she said.

"There's still a way to go before we reach the five million target, but we are confident that we will achieve this total before the 2029 deadline with the continued support of our community."

An additional £250,000 has come from Telford and Wrekin Council, which began match funding the money since the start of April.

The Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at the PRH would double chemotherapy capacity, with an extra 30 treatment bays.

It would also provide dedicated urology, lung and outpatient clinics, the charity said.
