Plans to build a new six-storey building at a historic dock have been rejected due to concerns it would impact the area's "historic charm."

The plans included demolishing two older industrial buildings to make way for the new apartments, as well as refurbishing an existing warehouse to be used as a social space with a gym, games area and reception.

Gloucester City Council member Rebecca Trimnell said she is pleased the plans have been scrapped and felt the development would change the "appearance and vibe" of the docks "permanently and negatively."

According to the local democracy reporting service, the new development was set to be at West Quay, between Llanthony Road and Severn Road, land which belongs to The Canal & River Trust.

The site is currently home to a car park and some old industrial buildings.

Councillor Sarah Sawyer, cabinet member for planning, said the application was withdrawn because it would have a negative impact on nearby traditional shipbuilders, T. Nielsen & Company.

"Any development in this area cannot impact their business; they are world leaders in their field and we want to protect them," she said.

Trimnell , who represents the area at the city council, said it was important to protect the "historic charm" of the docks.

"It was also totally unrealistic to claim that none of the 141 flats would own a car and therefore there was insufficient car parking to accommodate the size of this development," she added.

A spokesperson for H2O Urban said they were likely to make an updated submission in the next few months and "remain confident" that the proposed development "represents a positive opportunity to regenerate West Quay".
